We welcome the Government’s consultation on reforming weddings law in England and Wales.

The proposals in this consultation follow our 2022 report on weddings law, where we published our final recommendations proposing a fairer system that gives couples more choice over where and how their wedding takes place. The Government responded to our report in October 2025 giving its intention to modernise wedding law.

“In our weddings project we found that the current law does not work for many couples. Unnecessary restrictions and outdated regulations prevent many people from having a wedding that is meaningful to them. We are delighted that the Government is committed to taking forward reform of the law, and the announcement of its consultation today represents a significant step towards the introduction of a new legal framework for weddings in England and Wales.”
Professor Lisa Webley, Commissioner for Property, Family and Trust Law
