Repeals

The Law Commission does not just propose new laws, we also identify laws that have become obsolete and propose repealing them.

By reducing the size of the statute book, we aim to:

  • save the time of lawyers and other people who use it
  • avoid unnecessary costs
  • prevent people being misled or confused

How repeals work

We present our proposals to Government as Statute Law Repeals reports, published with a draft Bill. Proposals are then implemented by special Statute Law (Repeals) Bills.

There have been 19 of these special Bills since 1965. These have led to more than 3,000 acts being completely repealed. For more detailed information, read this review of statute law repeals work from 1965 to 2010.
