Working at the Law Commission

Working at the Law Commission

About us

The Law Commission is a small but highly influential organisation. We occupy a unique position where we are close to the centre of government but entirely independent of it.

We attract innovative legal professionals who are looking to go beyond practising the law and want to help answer some of the most complex and important challenges facing us all. Roles with the Law Commission are recognised throughout our profession and offer excellent on-going career opportunities.

How we work

Our legal roles involve leading or working as part of a legal reform team on topics outlined in law reform programmes. While our ways of working are clearly defined, team members are empowered to refine and improve the effectiveness of what we deliver.

We also offer a range of roles outside of our law reform teams, including communication and project management.

Our culture

While our output is important and world-leading, we also pride ourselves on offering a supportive, collegiate culture.

We aim to provide an excellent work life balance along with a range of benefits, including:

  • flexible working options including job sharing, hybrid sharing and compressed hours options
  • extensive learning and development opportunities
  • attractive civil service pension arrangements
  • generous annual leave

We also support a number of initiatives to improve access to legal careers from groups that have traditionally been excluded from the sector.
