Implementation

Our recommendations can only be implemented by a Government through Parliament after we have submitted a final report.

The way we work with Government is defined by a wide-ranging protocol. There is a separate protocol for working with the Government in Wales.

Following the Law Commission Act in 2009, the Lord Chancellor must report to Parliament on the Government’s progress at implementing our proposals.

Implementing our recommendations

The implementation phase of complex and wide-ranging reform recommendations can take considerable time as Government decides what to take forward and then steers it through Parliament. Sometimes our Commissioners become involved in that work, for example, by giving evidence to committees which consider the legislation

While many of our final reports are fully implemented, it is also common for some recommendations to require further exploration or for a project to lead to wider reform work.

Check the implementation status of completed Law Commission projects in the Implementation Table.
