Paving the way: Bridging the Bar interns at the Law Commission

In November, the Law Commission welcomed interns from Bridging the Bar (BTB) for an impactful internship week—a collaborative initiative designed to champion diversity and inclusivity in the legal profession.

Bridging the Bar, a charity dedicated to breaking down barriers to the Bar for students from underrepresented backgrounds, offers aspiring barristers invaluable exposure into the workings of the legal sector. The Law Commission, as the body responsible for ensuring the law is fair, modern, and simple, is proud to partner with BTB in nurturing talent that will help shape the future of law in the UK.

The three-day experience began with office introductions, team shadowing, and an overview of research tasks, followed by informal icebreakers and end-of-day reflections. The interns gained valuable insights into the role of Parliamentary Counsel and received career guidance from Research Assistants, including job application advice. Interns also delved into research projects, participated in a Q&A with the Head of Legal Services, and honed their presentation skills by preparing and sharing their research findings. With dedicated time to engage deeply with their teams, the experience concluded with feedback sessions and thoughtful reflections on their progress.

Here’s what some of the interns had to say about their time at the Law Commission:

“The internship at the Law Commission has been invaluable, it is a thoroughly enjoyable and insightful experience. It was great to meet the different members of the team from Research Assistants to Lawyers and even Parliamentary Counsel! I have very much enjoyed my time and cannot thank everyone enough for making my experience here so worthwhile. I would definitely recommend that anyone doing Bridging the Bar in subsequent years should sign up to the Law Commision internship.”

“An informative, eye opening and engaging internship”

“I met so many members of the team who were happy to impart their knowledge and experiences. Their approachability had such a positive impact on my experience at the Law Commission”

The Law Commission is delighted to continue working with Bridging the Bar in opening doors for talented individuals and creating a more inclusive legal profession.
